1 The 11 th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28, 1998 kicked off the Remembering Our Dead web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in Rita Hester s murder like most anti-transgender murder cases has yet to be solved. Every November, we at UCR recognize and honor these individuals with this poster display. To date, there are more than 400 documented cases of individuals dying because of violence against transgender people. 2 The Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance We set aside this day to memorialize those have been killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender that is, as a transsexual, cross-dresser, or otherwise gendervariant each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people. The Transgender Day of Remembrance raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, and publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through this vigil, we express our love and respect for these victims in the face of national indifference, hatred and violence against transgender people. (Paraphrased from Remembering Our Dead, )

5 Adele Bailey Shot 1984 N.E. Victoria, Australia The Age, Melbourne, Australia, July 4, 1998 Ms. Bailey s body was discovered in a mineshaft in Bonnie Doon in Evidence points to Detective Sergeant Denis Tanner as the killer.

6 Adrian Torres de Assuncao Bludgeoned and dumped along side the road October 7, 2003 Brescia, Italy Il Giorno, October 15, 2003 Torres de Assuncao was a 24-year-old Brazilian native living in Italy. She was discovered along the roadside, and taken to a local hospital. She passed away at the hospital, after surgeons attempted to save her life.

7 Alan Fitzgerald Walker Beaten and strangled to death by Adam David Blackford and Yitzak Abba Marta November 9, 1996 Fayetteville, Arkansas Southern Voice, July 24, 1997 and the Northwest Arkansas Times, July 11, 1997 Walker s body was discovered three days after the murder. KKK was scrawled in blood on a closet door in Walker s home, and the tires were slashed on Walker s vehicle. Blackford and Marta were both convicted to life in prison.

8 Alanna Kella Shot 1994 New York City, New York Melissa M. Foster She was found shot on her front porch, in her nightgown and robe. Additional photos of Alanna can be found on A Tribute to Alanna Kella.

9 Alejandro Ray Lucero Murdered March 3, 2002 Phoenix, Arizona Phoenix, Arizona Police Report Little is known about the death of Alejandro Ray Lucero, aside from the fact that she was murdered in Phoenix, and her body was dumped in the alley.

10 Alina Marie Barragan Not yet specified: allegedly strangled by Kozi Santino Scott. January 19, 2000 San Jose, California San Jose Mercury News, January 20, 2000 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

11 Amanda Milan Throat slashed by Dwayne McCuller June 18, 2000 New York City, New York Anonymous According to one report, several of the yellow cab drivers parked along the street cheered and applauded as Amanda bled to death. In exchange for pleading guilty, McCuller was promised a sentence of seventeen and a half years in prison, plus five years supervised release.

12 "Amirilis" Shot to death August 9, 2003 Guatemala City, Guatemala La Hora, August 9, 2003 Like Jorge Rafael Cruz, 28-year-old Amirilis was murdered by several individuals. Her killers made several passes around her in a car, first making complimentary comments before pelting her with water balloons, then tossing an apple at her on a return trip. When Amirilis made angry comments back at them for pelting her, they shot and killed her.

13 Ana Melisa Cortez Stabbed to death October 15, 2000 (Approximate) Nashville, Tennesse Nashville Tennessean, October 21, 2000 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

14 Andre Vacarro Numerous stab wounds and a gunshot to the head March 2, 1981 Providence, Rhode Island United Press International, August 15, 1981 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

15 Anjie Milano (Andy Rafael Milano) Murdered March 2002 Valencia, Venezuela The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) The body of Anjie Milano, in an advanced state of decomposition, was found behind a shopping center in the Mañongo hills. This is the third murder in Venezuela to be noted since the 2001 Day of Remembrance.

17 Anthony Swain Shot to death November 8, 1992 Atlanta, Georgia Dallas Denny, GEA No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

18 Antonia K. Attacked and Killed March 3, 2002 East Germany Name Witheld Antonia K. was attacked and killed on Easter Saturday by a drunken neo-nazi in Eastern Germany after he recognized her as a transsexual. He deliberately plowed his car into her, and she died three days later from the injuries sustained in the crash. The assailant was immediately taken into custody by police.

19 Aretha ReRe Scott (Franklin Freeman) Bled to death after being shot in the leg June 7, 2002 Charlotte, North Carolina The Charlotte Observer. June 30, 2002 Five months before Aretha Scott s death, she was picked up by an off-duty vice officer, who fired his service pistol twice during an argument over money. The officer quit during an internal investigation. Another officer was fired, and two other officers were suspended. Scott was killed five days before she was to be a witness in a hearing about one of the suspensions. Very little has been done since them to apprehend her murderer.

21 Astrid La Fontaine Shot May 20, 2000 Guatemala City, Guatemala Guatemala City, Guatemala No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

22 Barbara (William) Brodie Internal injuries January 3, 1981 Feltonville, Pennsylvania Philadelphia Inquirer, January 5, 1981 The liver, abdomen, and lungs were punctured when a blunt instrument was inserted in Brodie s rectum.

23 Bella Evangelista Shot, allegedly by Antoine Jacobs August 16, 2003 Washington, D.C. Washington Post, August 18, 2003 Bella Evangelista was a popular entertainer in D.C., and periodically performed at Club Chaos. She was shot multiple times at close range. Antoine D. Jacobs has admitted to the murder, but claims it was in self-defense. Police do not believe his story, and are treating this murder as a hate crime.

25 Billy Jean Lavette Murdered via a wound to the back of the head. November 20, 2000 West Savannah, Georgia Savannah Police Department Press Release, November 20, 2000 If anyone has any information concerning this incident they are encouraged to contact Savannah Police at or CrimeStoppers, anonymously, at A reward of up to $2500 is available from CrimeStoppers for credible information leading to an arrest or conviction in the incident.

26 Brandie Coleman (size 16 Garamond type) July 22, 2003 Indianapolis, Indiana Indianapolis Star, July 26, year-old Brandie Coleman, while not a transgender woman herself, was a close friend to Nireah Johnson, and was also shot in the head while sitting in Coleman s mother s SUV with Ms. Johnson. She had recently become a mother just two months prior to the murder. Paul Anthony Moore and Curtis L. Ward are also being tried in Coleman s death

27 Brandon (Teena) Shot to death, then stabbed, by John Lotter and Marvin Thomas Nissen December 31, 1993 Humbolt, Nebraska Omaha World Herald, January 9, 1994, amongst others On December 31, 1993, John Lotter and Marvin Thomas Nissen murdered Brandon, Lisa Lambert, and Philip De Vine in a farmhouse in rural Richardson County, Nebraska. These multiple murders occurred one week after Lotter and Nissen forcibly removed Brandon s pants and made Lana Tisdel, whom Brandon had been dating since moving to Falls City from Lincoln three weeks earlier, look to prove that her boyfriend was really a woman. Later in the evening of this assault, Lotter and Nissen kidnapped, raped, and assaulted Brandon. Despite threats of reprisal should these crimes be reported, Brandon filed charges with the Falls City Police Department and the Richardson County Sheriff, however, Lotter and Nissen remained free. Lotter and Nissen have both been convicted; Lotter is currenlty on death row and Nissen, who testified against Lotter, was sentenced to life without parole.

28 Cameron "Tina" Tanner Died as a result of wounds suffered March 11, 1992, when attacked by two individuals with baseball bats. April 21, 1992 San Francisco, California The Page of Rage Tanner had served as Empress of the San Francisco Imperial Court.

29 Carla Leigh Salazar (aka Carla Dougherty) Multiple Stab Wounds June 28, 1989 Santa Ana, California Sister Mary Elizabeth, Brenda Lana Smith R.af D., and The Orange County Register, June 30, 1989 Dixie Turner told the Orange County Register that one of her tenants had told her that he had seen Carla going to her fourth floor apartment on the elevator with a man about 11:15 p.m. The neighbors who lived below Salazar s apartment indicated that they heard Salazar playing her stereo after 11 p.m. but did not hear anything unusual. Investigators believe Salazar was stabbed to death during a scuffle, but gave precious little other information about the case.

31 Carlos Tasha Santiago (aka Carlos Santana) Shot to death by Jeffrey Todd Hammons and Todd Alan Thornton December 10, 1990 Oceanside, California The San Diego Union-Tribune, December 17, 1990 and The Los Angeles Times, June 22, 1991 Hammons and Thornton were both Marine corporals from Camp Pendleton, who killed Santiago over the $18.00 they paid her for oral sex.

32 Carmen Marie Montoya Multiple blows from a blunt object to her face and head July 10, 1991 Oakland, California GenderPAC Police questioned at least one subject, but there were no arrests.

33 Cassandra "Tula" Do Strangled August 26, 2003 Toronto, Ontario, Canada Toronto Police Department, August 26, 2003 Cassandra Do, or Sandra as her friends knew her, was working as a sex-worker under the pseudonym Tula in Toronto, saving up for genital surgery and nursing school. She had many friends. She was found in her 11th-floor apartment. An autopsy concluded that she was strangled to death. Cassandra is no relation to Carolyn Cossey, also known as Tula, and famous for her modeling work as well as an appearance as a Bond Girl.

34 Castro Nova Estabon Shot in the head June 11, 1990 San Diego, California The San Diego Union-Tribune, December 17, 1990 Castro was shot at the same time as Rafael Sanchez Ayala.

35 Chandini, aka Nazir Burned to Death December Bangalore, India Sangama (rights organization) Chandini was a 22 year old hijra, or transgender woman. While police has declared this to be a suicide, strong evidence suggests otherwise.

36 Chanelle Pickett Strangled by William Palmer. She also suffered a beating that left her face terribly bruised and bloody. 37 Chiron Collins (Allen Kenneth Byrd) 42 stab wounds to the head, neck, face, and arm by Theodore Roebuck May, 1984 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Philadelphia Daily News, May 4, 1985 Theodore Roebuck was convicted of murder, and sentenced to a 40-year state prison term.

38 Chrissey (Marvin) Johnson Multiple stab wounds delivered by Allen Horton. January 2, 1993 Baltimore, Maryland Cross-Talk #42, April 1993 and The Baltimore Sun, January 4, 1993 Chrissey was found by police naked, with her feet tied together. She had been stabbed at least 15 times and had been thrown from the second floor of her apartment to the first. Horton has told the police four different stories about that evening; one version had Johnson raping Horton.

39 Christiaan D'Arcy Strangled by Thomas Saltonstall. He also tied up D'Arcy and put him in the trunk of D'Arcy's car, which Saltonstall set on fire. January 26, 1993 Hartford, Conneticut The Hartford Courant, January 28, 1993, and July 23, Saltonstall, a friend of D Arcy s, pled guilty of the crime and was sentenced to 32 years in prison.

40 Christian Paige Brutally beaten about the head and ears, then strangled, stabbed deeply in her chest and breast area between 15 and 2 dozen times, and finally, burned. March 22, 1996 Chicago, Illinois Riki Anne Wilchins No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

41 Christine Chappel Blows to the head and possible drowning. March 2, 2000 Lowestoft, Suffolk, England The Independent, March 7, 2000 Ms. Chappel was weighted down with a length of chain, three 2.5 kg circular weights and two padlocks before being thrown into a local river. Her body was discovered when it washed up on the beach.

42 Cinnamon (Kendrick) Perry Shot to death July 20, 2003 Houston, Texas The Houston Chronicle, July 20, 2003 Perry, a 32 year old African-American, was shot by a passing car while walking down a street in the Montrose area in Houston shortly after dawn. She was taken to a local hospital, but died that afternoon.

43 Cortez Morris Knife wound to the chest by Joseph Alexander April 17, 1985 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania United Press International, April 17, 1985 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

44 Curdell James III Shot in the back by Robert Lee Davis Jr Tuscaloosa, Alabama The Associated Press Davis was found guilty of murder, after claiming that he shot James and Toya Charlton in the back in self defense.

45 Déjà (Dondre) Johnson Shot, by Jeffrey Trivanty Bowlegs April 2000 Miami, Florida Miami New Times, June 29, 2000 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

46 Daniel Phillip Danielle Redding Single gunshot wound to the head, allegedly by Jason Lee Starkey September 7, 2002 Daytona Beach, Florida Daytona Beach News-Journal, September 23, 2002 Redding worked at a hair salon by day, and as a sex worker in the evening. He was found face down with a bullet hole in his head in a vacant lot near a church. The alleged killer, Jason Lee Starkey, was shot and killed two weeks later.

47 Daniel A. Castro Shot once with a small-caliber handgun July 10, 1993 Santa Ana, California The Orange County Register, July 11, 1993 Police suspect that the gunman may have confronted Castro because he was crossdressed.

48 Danisha Williams Murdered February 28, 2003 Bradenton, Florida Sarasota Herald Tribune, March 4, 2003 Williams was very open as a transgender woman. She was discovered in her apartment after neighbors discovered a trail of blood in the hall, which lead to Williams s bathroom. Her body had been left in her bathtub.

49 David A. Perez Murdered 1991 San Francisco, California No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

50 David Edward Wigley Stabbed repeatedly in the chest and stomach November 8, 1993 San Antonio, Texas San Antonio Express-News, November 9, 1993 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

51 Huriell "Gypsy" Lockett (David King) Shot in the head October 14, 1991 Atlanta, Georgia No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

52 Dayana Valverde Shot July 1, 2003 Guatemala City, Guatemala La Hora, July 1, 2003 Valverde was shot multiple times in the streets of Guatamala City. Paramedics called to the scene did attempt to stabilize her wounds, but she passed away in intensive care at a local hospital.

53 Dayana Nieves (Jose Luis Neives Murdered by two men July 29, 2000 Carabobo, Nicaragua Amnesty International At the time of her death, she was still recovering from an earlier attack with a pellet gun.

54 Deanna Wilkinson Shot in the back of the head with a.357 magnum filled with hollow-point bullets, by Marcello Palma. May 20, 1996 Toronto, Ontario, Canada XTRA!, June 6, 1996, Issue No. 303 and the Toronto Star, April 29, Deanna was one of three murders over the same weekend by the same killer. Two of the victims were transpeople. Palma s lawyer claims that Palma was not criminally responsible when he killed them.

55 Deasha (Gerald Andrews) Shot multiple times August 8, 2002 Jacksonville, Florida WLTV 12. Jacksonville, Florida Deasha Andrews was discovered in her car, after having been shot several times. Police are not pursuing this as a hate crime, and do not feel that there is any tie-in between it and the Terrianne Summers case.

56 Debra Forte Multiple six-inch stab wounds to the chest, any of which would have been sufficient to kill her. She was also beaten about the head and shoulders, by Michael Thompson. May 15, 1995 Haverhill, Massachusetts Dallas Denny of GEA and Nancy Nangeroni Thompson pleaded guilty to 2nd degree murder, and received a life sentence with parole in 15 years.

57 Delores Mack Strangled February 22, 1993 Hahnville, Louisiana The Associated Press, August 17, 1999 and The Times Picayune, August 27, 1995 Mack was part of a series of murders, by an individual who reportedly would inject his victims with drugs, have sex with them when they were unconscious, and then kill them before dumping their body.

58 Derrick "Miss Tess" Hampton Stabbed and beaten October 23, 1993 Memphis, Tennessee The Memphis Commercial Appeal, January 2, 1994 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

59 Derry Glenn Shot to death December 19, 1992 Atlanta, Georgia Dallas Denny of GEA No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

60 Diane Delia Shot four times in the head by her husband, Robert Ferrera October 7, 1981 New York City, New York Philadelphia Daily News, October 11, 1982 Robert Ferrara was convicted of second-degree murder. Linda Wolfe covered this case in detail in the book The Professor and the Prostitute.

61 Dianne Aubert Stabbed in the back 121 times February 16, 1982 Quebec City, Quebec, Canada United Press International, March 1, 1982 Her roommate, Maryline Grenier, survived the attack, after receiving 30 knife wounds of her own.

62 Dinh Van Vo Strangled by Demian McGuire September 6, 1993 Honolulu, Hawaii Honolulu Star-Bulletin, December 5, 2000 McGuire was sentenced to 10 years in prison, for manslaughter.

63 Dion Webster Knife wound to the head November 4, 1996 New York, New York Associated Press, August 28, 1999 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

64 Donald Pierce Struck by a car driven by Fred Ray Belloff and dragged about 50 feet. September 4, 1990 San Diego, California The Los Angeles Times, September 17, 1990 and The San Diego Union-Tribune, December 17, 1990 Belloff, a minister for the homeless, was arrested, but the district attorney s office decided not to file a murder charge.

65 Donnie O. Osby Shot in the chest with a.45- caliber handgun by Keith Neil Washington August 17, 1993 Orlando, Florida Orlando Sentinel, August 19, 1993 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

66 Edna Brown Shot to death December 24, 1990 Atlanta, Georgia Dallas Denny, GEA No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

67 Eduardo Lora Vasallio Shot four times by Vernon Bryan August 11, 1990 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Philadelphia Daily News, December 29, 1990 Bryan claimed that he was acting in self-defence, and only meant to scare Vasallio. He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to five to ten years in prison.

68 Emonie Kiera Spaulding Shot, allegedly by Antwan D. Lewis. Emonie also had severe head wounds. August 20, 2003 Washington, D.C. WMAR, August 21, year-old Emonie Kiera Spaulding was from Massachusetts and North Carolina, and had been living in D.C. for about two years. According to her Uncle, Spaulding loved music as a child and sang in a church choir. Police discovered her partially nude body in a field. She had been shot but also had severe head wounds. Another transgender woman was brutally attacked the same evening as Spaulding, and a memorial to the recently-murdered Bella Evangelista was also destroyed that night. It is unknown if these are connected with Spaulding s death

69 Enrico Taglialatela Burned August 30, 2003 Napoli, Italy L'Unita, August 30, 2003 Taglialatela, a 39-year-old transsexual woman, was attacked by four individuals on August 19th who initially tried to proposition her then assaulted her when she refused. They also poured benzene on her and set her on fire. Others helped her to a local hospital, though she was later transferred to a larger facility. She suffered serious burns on 70% of her body. She died from these burns on the night of August 30th. Her killers have been jailed.

70 Ericka (Erick David) Yáñez Shot and killed, allegedly by a police officer July 15, 2003 San Pedro Sula, Honduras Amnesty International 19-year-old Honduran transgender woman Ericka Yáñez was allegedly attacked by two police officers, one of which reportedly killed Yánez with his service revolver. Both officers have been arrested and charged, one police agent Carlos Iván Contreras for the murder, and the other as an accomplice. Contreras has escaped custody. A witness to the crime, another local transgender woman known as China, has received death threats. brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through this vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred about violence against transgender people.

72 Erika Johana Bludgeoned October 10, 2003 Rome, Italy Corriere della Sera, October 15, 2003 Johana was a young Columbian transgender woman living in Italy. Her friend found the body leaning over the tub in the bathroom wearing only in a bra and slip. Her skull had been shattered by a blunt object. She had been dead for several days before she was discovered.

73 Ernest Ernestine Murray Shot March 2, 1981 Oakland, California San Francisco Examiner, March 3, 1981 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

74 Felix Abarca Murdered November 23, 1990 East County, California, on Sunrise Highway The San Diego Union-Tribune, December 17, 1990 The slaying of Felix, a 24-year-old Tijuana transsexual (according to the source above) was linked to the 5-year series of slayings of female prostitutes and drug addicts.

75 Felix Benitez Murdered July 16, 1985 New York City, New York The New York Times, November 2, 1986 Media coverage of the time pointed to this being part of a series of murders of primarily hom*osexual individuals in New York.

76 Fernanda (Boris Javier) Covarrubi Mutilated December 4, 2003 San Felipe, Chile La Cuarta, January 27, 2003 Covarrubi was a sex worker in San Felipe. She was taken from the area by an individual in a red truck, who was likely a former john of hers. Her mutilated body was found in a riverbed some time later. Local activists suspect a member of the military and/or a neo-nazi group.

77 Gary Brazon McMurtry Stabbed, allegedly by Michael Jennings May 17, 2002 Clintonville, Ohio Columbus Dispatch May 18, 2002 Gary Brazon McMurtry, Miss Gay Columbus and Miss Gay Ohio, was stabbed with a Samurai sword, allegedly by Michael Jennings. The assailant also stabbed McMurty s roommate.

78 Georgina Matehaere Beaten with a baseball bat, allegedly by Joe Tua "Bucket" Coleman December 22, 2002 Auckland, New Zealand New Zealand Herald, December 23, 2002 Matehaere s face was hit five times with a baseball bat on December 16th by a gang member named Coleman. Matehaere managed to get herself to a local hospital after the beating, but was promptly discharged. She was returned to the hospital via ambulance. She died six days later of her injuries. Her last words before she lost consciousness were a plea for peace. Diane Henare-Wynyard, Coleman s significant other, helped Coleman evade police for some time, so that he wouldn t be imprisoned during Christmas.

79 Gisele Gaga' Shot by a police officer January 31, 1995 Curitiba, Brazil Cross-Talk, August 1995 The officer claimed that he acted in self-defense, but witnesses said that Gaga was unarmed and that the policeman shot her after trying to obtain sexual favors.

80 Giuseppe Mandanici Killed by a hit man hired by his father, Vincenzo Mandanici, for 700 dollars Sicily, Italy Cross-Talk #50 No personal information is available about this victim of transgender related violence.

81 Gordon Tuckey Beaten to death by Thomas Dunn. July, 1993 Sydney, Australia Sydney Star Observer, December 4, 1997 Dunn used the hom*osexual advance defense to avoid a murder conviction. He was found guilty of manslaughter, a lesser crime.

82 Grayce Baxter Choked to death by Patrick Daniel, who then dismembered the body into several pieces with a hacksaw. Araujo had been dressing as a woman since she was 14 years old, and was murdered at the age of 17. During a house party, she was revealed to have been more a male. After this revelation, at least three individuals Michael Magidson, Jose Antonio Merel, and Jason Cazares allegedly beat her, dragged her into a garage, and strangled her, before disposing of her body in a remote location 150 miles away. All three of the above suspects are in custody awaiting trial on murder charges with a hate crime enhancement. May, 1989 Portland, Oregon KOIN Channel 6 and KPTV Channel 12 A body, unearthed in the backyard of a southeast Portland home on December 24th, 1999, has been identified by police as that of Todd Alexander Asay, who worked as a female impersonator at Darcelle s Nightclub, under the name of Lindsey Alexander. Todd/Lindsey was last seen alive in May of 1989, and, due to circ*mstances surrounding the death, was listed as a homicide victim by Portland police. A phone tip led officers to the remains, located in the yard of a residence on Southeast Hollman Avenue. The Oregon State Medical Examiner s office determined that the remains were, indeed, of Todd/Lindsey. Police have also already determined a suspect in the case, that being Brian David Hill. Hill is currently in custody for the murder of his ex-wife. The owner of the yard in which the body was found was not linked to the death, according to police. Todd/Lindsey was 25 years old at the time of the disappearance.

Marsha was found floating in the Hudson River near the piers in New York City shortly after the 1992 Pride March. The baby was three days old, and died of blunt force trauma to the head, as well as strangulation. Dallas police have concluded that the newborn was dead only three hours after his parents brought him home from the hospital. A Collin County Medical Examiner also found shards of glass in the baby s esophagus and small intestine, possibly indicating that someone initially tried to kill the child by forcing them to eat glass, in an effort to cause internal bleeding. Detectives won t speculate whether Aruna Kavili allegedly killed her child because she was ashamed, or because she was pressured into doing so by her husband. Mr. Kavali has not been charged.
