Sudan's Civil War: A Human Rights Crisis Unveiled
The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (African Commission) has shed light on the dire human rights situation in Sudan, which has been engulfed in civil war for over two years. In a groundbreaking move, the African Commission conducted a virtual joint fact-finding mission, a unique approach to gathering insights from victims directly. This mission, spanning from June 2024 to March 2025, was a testament to the Commission's dedication to uncovering the truth.
The 85th ordinary session of the African Commission was a pivotal moment. During this session, the report of the mission was unveiled, revealing both the meticulous methodology and the shocking findings. The panel discussion, a who's who of human rights experts, included Commissioner Hatem Essaiem, Vice Chair of the African Commission, and country rapporteur for Sudan, among others. The diverse panel brought a wealth of expertise to the table, ensuring a comprehensive analysis.
The African Commission's methodology was innovative. By adopting a victim-based approach, commissioners had the opportunity to interview a wide spectrum of victims, including women, migrants, and indigenous peoples. This direct engagement provided invaluable insights into the lived experiences of those affected by the conflict.
The findings were eye-opening. The mission confirmed the long-standing root causes of the conflict and identified a disturbing array of violations against the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. These violations included the right to life, human dignity, liberty, freedom of expression, association, and assembly, as well as the rights of vulnerable groups and the right to peace and security. The report also highlighted the plight of human rights defenders, who were arrested and detained for possessing evidence of ongoing human rights abuses.
The lack of accountability for these violations was a stark concern. A panel speaker, in a powerful call to action, urged States parties to the African Charter to take decisive steps. They advocated for the adoption of measures that would ensure justice, protect victims, and prevent further human rights violations in Sudan.
