The Macau Grand Prix: Where Legends Are Forged and History Is Made! This year's event delivered a whirlwind of drama, showcasing the best in GT racing and beyond. Let's dive into the heart-stopping moments from the FIA GT World Cup and other thrilling categories. Buckle up; it's going to be a wild ride!
Antonio Fuoco etched his name in the Macau history books by securing the inaugural Super Pole for the FIA GT World Cup. This incredible feat means he'll start the Qualification Race from pole position, alongside his AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 teammate, Yifei Ye. This sets the stage for an epic showdown on Saturday.
The new Super Pole format, introduced for 2024, saw the top ten drivers from the initial Qualifying Q1 session battle it out, one at a time, for the best lap. Armed with fresh Pirelli tires, the drivers delivered a breathtaking spectacle on the iconic street circuit. Fuoco's blistering lap of 2 minutes 15.535 seconds not only secured him the top spot but also eclipsed the existing Macau GT lap record of 2 minutes 16.051 seconds set by Daniel Serra in 2023.
Edoardo Mortara, a seven-time Macau Grand Prix winner, known as "Mr. Macau," delivered an outstanding performance, securing third place. He described his Super Pole lap as one of the best he's ever driven in his illustrious career.
Unfortunately, Sheldon van der Linde, a pre-race favorite, faced a setback after a crash in Q1, sidelining him from the Super Pole competition.
But here's where it gets controversial... The weekend isn't just about the FIA GT World Cup. The 72nd Macau Grand Prix also features three other FIA-sanctioned categories: the FIA FR World Cup, the FIA F4 World Cup, and the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour.
In the FIA FR World Cup, Théophile Naël of KCMG ENYA Pinnacle Motorsport clinched pole position for the Qualification Race. Freddie Slater of SJM Theodore Prema Racing secured second place, and Evan Giltaire of ART Grand Prix took third. Naël's impressive performance came after a challenging start, highlighting the unpredictable nature of racing.
Meanwhile, in the inaugural FIA F4 World Cup, Sebastian Wheldon seized pole position for Saturday's Qualification Race. The young American driver posted a best lap of 2 minutes 24.148 seconds, edging out Kean Nakamura-Berta by a mere 0.136 seconds. Wheldon's victory is particularly poignant, given his late father, Dan Wheldon, was a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner.
In the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour, Néstor Girolami claimed his first pole position of the season, outperforming his title rivals, Yann Ehrlacher and Thed Björk. This victory earned Girolami 15 crucial points.
Saturday's Schedule (Local Time):
- 11:40-12:45: FIA F4 World Cup Qualification Race (8 laps)
- 13:20-14:00: Kumho FIA TCR World Tour Race 1 (10 laps)
