A pressing issue that demands our attention is the rising burden of epilepsy in the northeast region, as highlighted by GNRC Hospitals. On National Epilepsy Day, experts from GNRC shed light on a critical health concern that affects millions worldwide, including over 10 million in India alone.
The Stigma and the Silence
Epilepsy, a neurological condition, often goes unnoticed and misunderstood, leading to a significant treatment gap. With an estimated three lakh individuals in Assam and over seven lakh across the Northeast potentially living with epilepsy, the need for awareness and early diagnosis is paramount.
But here's where it gets controversial: the social stigma surrounding epilepsy prevents many from seeking help, and this silence can have devastating consequences.
Unveiling the Truth: Early Diagnosis, Effective Treatment
GNRC Hospitals, with their extensive experience treating over 31,000 epilepsy patients, emphasizes that this condition is highly manageable. Over 70% of patients can live seizure-free with the right medication, and for those with drug-resistant epilepsy, advanced diagnostics and surgical interventions offer hope.
Senior neurologists Dr. Nabajyoti Barkataky and Dr. Rupjyoti Das stress the importance of early diagnosis. With over 40 possible symptoms, epilepsy can often be mistaken for other issues, from behavioral problems to sleep disorders.
Dr. Mausumi Borthakur and Dr. Amit Ranjan Baruah highlight the role of awareness and acceptance in closing the treatment gap. They emphasize that epilepsy is not a curse and that those living with it can lead fulfilling lives with the right support and treatment.
Senior neurosurgeon Dr. Paran Jyoti Barman adds that epilepsy surgery is a safe and effective option when medications fail, challenging the notion that it should be a last resort.
Challenging Outdated Beliefs, Empowering Lives
Dr. Sumita Kalita urges society to shed its outdated beliefs about epilepsy. She emphasizes that people with epilepsy can pursue education, careers, marriage, and even excel in sports, leading completely normal lives.
As part of their National Epilepsy Day initiatives, GNRC Hospitals is hosting a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on November 17. The session will feature renowned experts discussing comprehensive epilepsy care, sleep and epilepsy, and refractory epilepsy management.
This CME aims to update clinicians on modern strategies for complex epilepsy cases, ensuring that the northeast region stays at the forefront of epilepsy care and management.
